A "mole" is a protester who stays in a self-dug underground tunnel so that heavy machinery cannot traverse the ground above. The tunnels were mostly dug through sand, making them extremely dangerous. In Camp Fairmile, seven protesters hid underground for almost a week, locking themselves behind barricaded steel doors and to metal pipes concreted into the earth. Evicting the protesters cost the corporation building the road millions of dollars.
