Welcome to Galleryscope, an ongoing series of profiles of Chicago-area art galleries. Chicago has a very active art gallery scene, and Robert Kameczura, art critic for The Site of Big Shoulders, introduces you to some of his favorite Chicago art venues.

Robert KameczuraRobert KameczuraSome of these are in areas traditionally associated with art, for example near the Loop and West Loop, while others are off the beaten track in neighborhoods and suburbs. For those who want to venture on more distant "art safaris" and get away from the city bustle and hustle, we also include some interesting places that are within a few hours' journey from Chicago, but which are worth the trip.

Each Galleryscope feature presents a particular gallery in general terms: the type of art it carries, usually some notes about the quality of the opening receptions, as well as particulars about location, hours, Web site, etc. In addition, each profile presents several examples of works of artists handled by the gallery.

Check back regularly for new gallery profiles. Feel free to let us know if you have a favorite art spot you feel is worth a visit so we can take a look and report. You can reach Robert by sending mail to:
