CHICAGO – The Site of Big Shoulders (http://sobs.org), a not-for-profit online arts publication that focuses on Chicago arts, seeks original artwork submissions for its 2011 Art+Poetry Chicago contest. For the first half of this year, The Site of Big Shoulders solicited original poems from Chicago poets. Now, artists can submit original visual works based on these poems. In October, The Site of Big Shoulders will pick the winning artwork submissions and present both the poems and artwork at a poetry reading and reception with accompanying projected artwork.
This is the second year The Site of Big Shoulders has presented Art+Poetry Chicago. "Last year, we worked with RHINO Poetry magazine to publish their featured poets and solicit original artwork from Chicago artists," said The Site of Big Shoulders Publisher Justin Kerr. "Our event showcased both the poems during a reading, and the artwork as projected during the reading. The artists had a chance to get up and speak to the audience about their work. It was a fantastic synaesthesia of original Chicago content from two different art forms."
Chicagoland artists are encouraged to get information and submit their work through the online submission forms available at http://sobs.org/Special-Projects/Art+Poetry-Chicago-2011/. The contest runs through the beginning of October 2011, and art winners will be announced in early October 2011. All winners and participants are invited to the Oct. 22, 2011, gala at 1543 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL.
“This project is unique in Chicago,” said Robert Kameczura, the art and classical music critic for The Site of Big Shoulders. “It's a great way for poets to both get their work published and to see their poems realized in a visual medium.”
The Site of Big Shoulders Publisher Justin Kerr hopes that Art+Poetry Chicago 2011 “inspires new and more established artists to reach out to their local contemporaries, to share their work and at the same time to communicate with other artists and creatives.”
Poetry+Art Chicago continues a long tradition of support and promotion of Chicago arts by The Site of Big Shoulders, including the 2010 Art+Poetry Chicago project, which featured collaboration with Rhino Poetry Magazine.
